I woke up in the hospital, my head in more pain than the worst hangover in the world. Tom was sitting in a chair next to my bed, watching me. Fred was in a chair in the corner, his head nodding as if he’d fallen asleep.

“What time is it?” I asked Tom, my voice raspy.

“Two in the morning.” He moved closer.

“Dana and Scott? Where are they?”

“I don’t know. They weren’t anywhere around when the paramedics arrived.” He reached out and took my hand. “Did they do this to you?”

“No. Dana saved my life.”

“Then who?”

It was such an effort to talk. “Two women. From Bayfield.”

“What two women? How do you know they were from Bayfield?”

The nurse came in and checked the monitor by my bed. “She needs to rest,” she said to Tom.

“I just need to ask her—”

“She needs to rest,” she said in a voice that even the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension couldn’t argue with. She bent over my bed. “What’s your pain level on a scale from one to ten?”

“Twenty-seven.”

She smiled and handed me a plastic thing hooked up to my IV. “You can give yourself a shot of pain meds whenever you need it. Just push the button.”

I pushed the button. The room started to spin a little, and then it was lights out.
